Today’s topics include President Trump signing an order to boost AI in federal agencies, and Ericsson and Intel partnering on a 5G platform.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Feb. 11 intended to give backing to the role of the U.S. government in artificial intelligence development. The order lays out the American AI Initiative, which contains five major steps in growing support for artificial intelligence research and development.
The first step is to direct the government to prioritize AI investments in their R&D missions, and to strengthen and leverage existing AI efforts. The second is to make federal data, models and computing resources more available to AI research and development. The third is to set governance standards for AI, and the fourth calls for AI-related skills development in the workforce.
The last step calls for international engagement by promoting an environment that supports AI R&D. It also calls for protecting U.S. developments against strategic competitors and foreign adversaries.
Ericsson and Intel are coming together again, this time to develop a hardware and software management platform that will enable communications service providers to more easily and affordably launch new services around 5G, network-functions virtualization and the cloud.
The multiyear collaboration effort will combine Ericsson’s software-defined infrastructure offering with Intel’s Rack Scale Design reference architecture to create a platform that will provide cloud-like agility and efficiency to communications service providers that are looking to streamline operations and embrace modern advanced technologies like 5G and NFV.
According to Phil Harris, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter Solutions Group, the platform will provide CSP data center administrators with “a more efficient, cost-effective, and fine-grained way to manage a 5G network’s server resources.”
